Just when I needed an idea for my column this month a great book came along to provide one. Judith Curr, Executive Vice-President and Publisher of Atria Books and Washington Square Press, gave me a copy of MJ Rose's The Reincarnationist (Mira, September 2007) and I read it immediately. It is an incredible story that rings true for me about past lives and how they affect present ones. What you will find compelling about The Reincarnationist is that it serves as a fascinating primer for all of us to dig into our creative bag of tricks to align ourselves with who we were, where and with whom we've been and to untangle the knots that past deeds and control dramas got us into this time.

I spoke with MJ Rose and here is what she had to say about her book.

Q. MJ, what grabbed me about your book from the start was how you laid out parallel lives with your characters. How were you able to do that?

A. I write very much as if I'm seeing a movie in my head and just putting down on paper what's playing out in my mind and so a lot of the book unfolded for me going back and forth like the way you read it. So Josh-the main character-discovers his own past lives in real time in the novel-his action precipitate his memories and I simply followed that.

That said, there were two parts of the novel that I wrote separately and then integrated them in afterwards.

And since I did five drafts of the novel, I was able to smooth out the transitions.

Q.  Have you always believed that you lived life after life?

A. Yes. When I was three years old, I told my great grandfather things about his childhood in Russia that there was simply no way I could have known. He became convinced I was a reincarnation of someone in his past. Over time, after more incidents, my mother-a very sane and logical woman-also came to believe it.

So, reincarnation was an idea I grew up with, that my mom and I talked about and researched together.

At some point, the idea to write a novel about the subject was just there, the way ideas seem to suddenly appear. And then for years, I flirted with the idea of writing a novel about someone like my mother, who started out skeptical but came to believe in reincarnation. But I kept putting it off, afraid that if I did people would think I was a "wo"o weirdo.

A few years ago, on the exact anniversary of my mom's death, my niece said some very provocative things to me about my mother-things she really couldn't have known. That's when the pestering idea to write this novel became an obsession.

Q.  MJ, I click connected with the concept of Memory Stones, amulets to enhance past life recall. Were you insinuating that certain precious and semi-precious stones trigger past life memories? Explain.

A.  In my own spiritual journey, I've done some work with meditation and mediation devices. And in my research into past life regression and my own experience being regressed I learned that the way to access past life memories is through deep hypnosis or deep meditation. So it was not a big leap for me to make that certain meditation devices would help induce deeper meditation which would induce past life memories. I call these devices memory tools. And the stones in this novel represent one of those tools.

Q.  Do you plan to do a sequel to The Reincarnationist? The book seems to beg for one.

A.  Not a sequel exactly. I'm doing this series a little differently. There won't be continuing characters but rather a continuing group of objects.

The first book is about the discovery of and adventure around an ancient memory tool that helps people access their past lives.

I've suggested in this book that there were 12 such memory tools created in ancient India over 5000 years ago.  In each book in the series, a different one of those memory tools will surface and the story will flow from there.

                                  ***

You can't know me more than five minutes without realizing that I know that we live life after life after life. Nothing about this planet makes any sense unless we have to inherit what we create. The tipping point about reincarnation for me was that God (the Divine) (the Creator) would not make one person handsome or beautiful, brilliant and richer than Croesus and another ugly, stupid and dirt poor. It makes no sense. What is reasonable is that each of us must experience everything and be everybody in order to understand our true identity. In other words, we must live through a lot of identities that are not who we are. Separation from the Divine ultimately enhances our desire to find our true self.

Give MJ Rose's book a good read. She has told a gripping tale about two people who must return to make amends for the past.

The Sun goes into Scorpio on October 23, so this is the month we all get to turn inward to see what the roots of our souls look like. There is a Full Moon at 2 degrees of Taurus on October 26th. This means that just as soon as we adjust to the dim lights and secretive ways of the Plutonians we must turn up the watts to see how much scratch we have left to tide us over for the month. Taurus is always about love and money. Who knows? For some of you the money may go bye-bye and so may the lover! The New Moon at 17 degrees of Scorpio on November 9th favors all water and earth signs, especially Scorpios.

Mercury is still retrograde until November 1st so you better pay attention to all things mechanical—lights, gas, computers, cars, late airline arrivals, lost luggage—and never sign contracts under these aspects.

Mars goes retrograde until January 28th, 2008 at 12 degrees of Cancer, which means that we might have to put up with the moody blues of the snarly Crabs for too long. In order to weather the emotional upheavals of this long and winding transit, be forewarned before engaging women—they may have a bark and a bite!

Uranus goes direct on November 25th at 14 degrees of Pisces which asks that mutable signs expect the unexpected and live with it. Like life and eventual death, there is nothing you can do to make a planet stop dead in its tracks: it is trying to teach those affected some important and life-changing lessons—like how to tell reality from make believe!

Happy Halloween, all of you signs of the Zodiac!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

If you ever wanted to strut your stuff this is the time to do it. The warlocks knew what they were doing when they declared Halloween during the Scorpio cycle because nobody can change drag faster than you ladies and gentlemen of the night. If you can avoid bankruptcy under that Full Moon in Taurus on October 26th, you will get all treats and no tricks this month. You may want to mend a few fences and forgive a few old lovers because just as soon as you’re counting your candy from Halloween you might bite down on something you can’t chew or swallow.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 20)

You better enjoy the perks of having your ruler Jupiter in your sun sign because all good things come to an end—and your gravy train is going to come to a screeching halt in early January. Rather than waste the next two months you might want to see what condition your spirituality is in and make a beeline for the best way to support yourself when Jupiter slithers into Capricorn. What I love about you Archers is that anything goes as long as you can get it going. Uranus in Pisces and Saturn in Virgo don’t help you one bit. It’s time to dig in and do more than Om your way to Bountiful.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19)

You’ll get the best fall-out from the Full Moon in Taurus on October 26th and the New Moon in Scorpio on November 9th. If your ship comes in you’ll definitely be at the dock and not at the airport. I know you can’t wait to see if Pluto moving into the sign of you Goats is the Best of Times or the Worst of Times. Only more time and few more transits will tell. My advice to you is to get out your blueprint for living and check it over to see if it will hold water or will sink under the first tough test it’s put to. Your tried and true allies this month are Pisces, Cancers and Scorpios.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 17)

Neptune is going direct on November 1st at 19 degrees of Aquarius so you better be ready for any underhanded shenanigans or dirty deals. When a planet is retrograde the effects of its movement are diminished, but the minute it goes direct in motion, all bets are off. The most deadly side affect of Neptune is that just when you thought your horse would win, he pulls up lame before he finished the race or that stock that looked delicious in May drops through the floor in November. Stick to what you’ve got and never believe anybody unless it rings true for you.

Pisces (February 18 - March 20)

Rumor has it that you Fish are beginning to like all the novel and unexpected that Uranus has been bringing into your life the last few years. Now you have the challenge of letting go of the old models and reconstructing new ones with new materials and new tools. Your soul is preparing for the World View shifts that will be happening all around you. Stay the course and use your innate creativity to see the greater possibilities when you envision the way the world can be for all of us when you let go of all the false realities. If you ever wanted to replace greed and narcissism with sharing and humility now is the time.

Aries (March 21 - April 20)

You can afford to think that the New World Order has you Rams in charge if you want to, but all those sizzling transits are not going to align with your selfish and self-centered ways much longer. True that Jupiter and Pluto in Sagittarius couldn’t be cooperating more and Neptune in Aquarius is also feeding you happy thoughts, but Pluto is headed toward Capricorn until 2023 and that is a long time to bring you frisky types into alignment with “receive to share”. Like squirreling away something for leaner times, you guys and gals had best be looking toward what does interrelated and interconnected look like because holding hands and saying “May I” is closer than you think.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20)

Unfortunately for you Bulls, this month might seem a bit like a Bear Market. The Full Moon at 2 degrees of Taurus and the Sun opposing you for 30 days won’t be like rolling in clover, but more like eating slop on Big Brother. Under the New Moon in Scorpio on November 9th you may begin to think that some people have all the luck. You know the old astro-adage: A Scorpio says, “What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine, too!” It ain’t all bad. You can give your credit cards a rest and drop the Widow’s Mite into a savings account or into the collection plate at church. It never hurts to give when you can least afford to.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

It’s back to the drawing board or classroom of life for you Twins because Saturn is going to be refining you—testing you—loving you into submitting to what the Divine wants for your life. And you can’t hold onto old ideas when the game calls for a new set of plans. When you watch yourself—observe you up close and personal—you will be able to see the transformation deeply because you will catch yourself before you fall for something old and used and non-functional. My advice would be to stay where you live and work and change the things you can—you! It never helps to move out of town or drop old friends because they’ll only keep showing up somewhere else.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

It seems like you are see-sawing every other day of your life no matter where the planets move and aspect one another. It is in your DNA to be a Moody Blues boy or girl and you have lived with this all your life. But some days and months are better than others and this is one of your better cycles. Both lunations are blessing you. However, the Moon, your ruler, moves into a different sign every two and a half days—some of those lunas can make you loco while others make you want to dance all night. Nobody can tell you how you are feeling, but I will remind you that you are not your feelings. The fact of the matter is that it rains on the just and the unjust. Smile, the Divine is watching!

Leo (July 22 - August 22)

Every day may not be a holiday but having Saturn out of your Sun sign must be making you feel like you won the lottery whether you did or not. One thing I can assure you is that with all the squares from the New and Full Moons. this month you will hardly notice a change because nothing can make you wiggle and wig out like Saturn sitting like the Foo Bird on top of your head. Take life as a gift this month because you are still in reconstruction. You know that old adage, “God’s not done with you yet?” It’s true for you Lions and Lionesses. Have fun, just don’t play in the traffic and watch whose husband or wife you ask to dance. You are the frisky sort, so behave.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

If you ever wanted to cut and run this is the time to do it. But wait—you would miss out on all the good times that you’ll one day have because you refused to face all the devils and demons that were causing people to recoil from you. No one likes a critic unless he’s analyzing movies or food. Take a deep breath and tend to your own business. It is okay to ask for help and to say you’re sorry. Amends are not only good for the soul, they draw people to you like a sugar-holic to pecan pie topped with crème fraiche. If your career has played out where you work the universe will move you to higher ground. If a relationship is over, you will wake up and he or she won’t be there. Turn it all over to the Divine!

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

You weathered Venus going retrograde and will persist when Mercury slides back on the 13th of October, but your bump in the Zodiac will be when Mars goes retrograde in Cancer upsetting your best laid plans. You are famous for diplomacy so you are going to need all the tact in the world to avoid emotional clashes with those of the opposite sex. If I can steer your game plan a tad may I suggest that you keep a lower profile for awhile—would you believe that Mars will be retrograde for three months? The upside is that you will be able to bank more than you spend and we all know how you like to throw it around. Who knows; maybe the cooler temperatures will chill the seething you have been holding onto. The best idea I have is to let it and them go. Keep your Zen center intact.

Internal Disorder

Wouldn’t it be easier to blame others for our emotional troubles—and actually get away with it?  We try it, but when we do, the relief is certain to be only temporary—things only intensify and get worse.  The universe will continue to provide us with plenty of opportunities to look in the mirror, in the guise of others, until we learn the lessons to set us free from negative attachments to ourselves and others.  Most likely these emotional tirades fester from misplaced anger.

The next time you want to react by pointing the finger at someone else for your internal disorder, ask yourself “What is it that I need to change in me?” In that moment of honesty and humility a door will open to allow you to take steps to be free from the bondage of yourself and others.
