A Courageous Lady Cleans up Texas Town

Something phenomenal happened almost twenty years ago, but in light of Al Gore's Oscar-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth, I wanted to shed more light on someone who was a pioneer in cleaning up the environment before the likes of Gore and other"greening the planet" types came to the forefront of consciousness.

I have known Phyllis Glazer more than 25 years. Bright, loving and charismatic, when I met Phyllis she was a daughter, a wife and mother who was full of spunk and I always detected a no-nonsense woman buried beneath her easy laugh and caring nature.

On April 30, 1988, the third anniversary of her father's death, Phyllis and her mother and husband bought a beautiful ranch in Winona, the piney woods of East Texas. What was to have been a pristine and peaceful getaway on weekends, holidays and vacations instead, through an"accidental discovery" on October 18, 1991, became overlaid in a cloud of chemical smoke coming from a nearby toxic waste dump.

Within days of her finding out about these toxic fumes, her mouth and throat irritated her so badly that she took a mirror and looked at the source of irritation. Phyllis said the roof of her mouth had melted with skin hanging down like stalactites from the ceiling of a cave. Her doctor found ulcers down her throat, nose and mouth. She also had a hole in her nasal septum.

The outcome of this environmental disaster was that Phyllis Glazer found out that the Winona community had experienced similar adverse health effects for years. She responded to pleas for help by founding Mothers Organized to Stop Environmental Sins (MOSES), a grassroots nonprofit organization using education, litigation and service to preserve and protect rural, low income, and minority communities from exposure to toxic substances by hazardous waste. Phyllis used her sizeable trust fund to accomplish an end to toxicity in Winona.

With help from broadcast and print media in Texas and national coverage by the likes of Sixty Minutes and Dateline, on March 20, 1997-after having been sued herself by the hazardous waste facility under the civil RICO (Racketeering Influenced Criminal Organization), and countersuing-Phyllis and her posse succeeded in seeing the toxic waste dump closed. MOSES continued to be the public"watchdog" over the closure activities until the property had been cleaned up as much as possible.

I saw Phyllis in Dallas, Texas in early October and asked her permission to retell her story, and then asked her to write me what support readers could lend to her efforts to clean up toxic waste. Her response is printed below.

Dear Albert,

We have always had a mutual admiration society of one another.  In the book Tammy Cromer-Campbell wrote, Fruit of the Orchard-Environmental Justice in East Texas
, my essay tells the story of what I and many other concerned residents of Winona, were able to do to stop one operating toxic waster dump from further contamination. The real story was extremely complex.  Some press, wanting to make me into something I never was, wrote that I have been a socialite.  I never was nor did I ever run in those circles.  I wouldn't know a socialite if one jumped up and bit me.

My immediate family was supportive.  (Her husband) R.L.'s family literally shunned me as did almost all of our Dallas friends and acquaintances.  I have kept my distance as best I can from them since.  I must say, however, that there were also those, even some in R.L.'s industry, that consider me a hero.  I've been introduced to children and grandchildren by people who know the story, as a living hero-this included a judge in Tyler.  I've always had my own, literary friends, those I write with.

Nothing has changed in the government's involvement in assisting industry site in poor areas where people simply do not have a chance in hell of fighting the inevitable pollution and illness it brings.  Government officials have become salesmen of deception, telling these poor communities that these toxic dumps are safe.

People can no longer support M.O.S.E.S.  I closed it down one year ago September.  People can always send me an e-mail or letter or call me.  I can tell them what communities need their donations-literally for their very lives.

Love you,

Phyllis

Phyllis recently said that she and I had always been in a mutual admiration society. In my world, men and women and young people like Phyllis Glazer will not only be admired by me but I will open my big mouth and tell the world about them. I say time to time, 'what you do speaks so loud I can't hear what you say.'

Phyllis, what a great woman you are! God bless you for what you have done to make one place on God's earth cleaner, safer and more awakened to the alternative to lies and deceptive malfeasance by the government.

A lot of you have written and called to ask: What's up economically in 2008? Will the stock market continue to yo-yo or will it begin to post more steady positive gains? When will the subprime debacle be over and the housing market thrive again?

Astrology provides a lot of answers but if you were in my shoes you would answer a question with a question. And the question I pose to you is:"Are you ready to change the things you can-yourself?" None of the downslides happened because we were victims of a cabal that made us do the things we've done. So much of what has happened can be traced to 'if it's too good to be true…' and those who have been foolish enough to play Russian roulette with their finances are paying the piper.

The most amazing celestial phenomena happen from the first month on for awhile. Not only will Saturn be in the earth sign, Virgo for two more plus years, but Jupiter will

co-join Pluto in the sign of Capricorn, another earth sign. Saturn restricts; Jupiter expands. And Pluto is known to destroy and take out what has run its course. All of this makes for a very strange trio of planets to rearrange how we think and invest and what we believe, and the worldview. The operative overview to consider is that all of these celestial movements are earth signs-practical and feet-on-the-ground sensibility. Could we not say that we must become more conservative, financially and spiritually?

Pluto is moving into Capricorn January 27th and will remain there until 2024. Although Pluto was declassified as a planet (more poppycock and smoke and mirrors), there is no question that Pluto does what it has been famous for longer than it has been discovered-1930. Pluto represents the urge to change-transform and regenerate-bringing rebirth and a second chance at living more authentically. But it is a symbol of contamination, infection, destruction, rot and decay-the need to eliminate and start over.

We can expect that since Pluto represents a generational influence, our children and their children will hopefully begin to rebuild what greed, narcissism, selfishness and"it's all about me and my needs and comfort" has destroyed. Biblically, I feel that oftentimes we have built our house on sand and what we held so dear is about to be blown away. That's enough preaching from me, though. Let's see what late December and January hold for each of us.

The Winter Solstice begins and the Sun goes into Capricorn on December 22nd. Among other things, the Winter Solstice is when the day is the shortest and there is more darkness-but from there forward days get longer.

There is a Full Moon at 1 degree of Cancer on December 23rd, and because of so much activity planetarily, this will be as very active day. Remember, full moons are about things coming to fruition and then all energies go into the new moon in 14 days.

There is a New Moon at 17 degrees of Capricorn on January 8th-Sun and Moon will be in the sign of the Goat and Jupiter will have moved into Capricorn as well. This will be one of the most powerful lunations for Capricorn specifically all year, and will benefit all earth and water signs.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19)

No sign will be more in its element than you Goats this year and for years to come. Along with new structures and foundations being laid a lot of what you have carefully put together will give way to the new. Our world will take more than a few cues from the slow and deliberate and steadfast manners that rule you. We will all go back to making profit a few pennies at a time rather than insane yo-yo movement of global markets. Bottom line: you are in for a new and more hopeful beginning.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 17)

With Neptune in Aquarius for a few more years you are going to start the year off still trying to separate real from too good to be true. My advice to you would be to check your antenna and see if it is pointing to a part of Mass Consciousness that is going to send out a signal with solid practical information or more pie in the sky. My hunch tells me it is time for you to change stations and frequencies.

Pisces (February 18 - March 20)

You leaners, dreamers and schemers are going to have the best New Year in many moons with all those good vibes from Jupiter and Pluto in Capricorn and the caution of Saturn opposing you for two plus more years. With the earth moving beneath your feet with Uranus in Pisces, you will find that you are happy to be rocking and rolling into 2008. Whatever you do, just know that this year there will be a lot of work with good payouts and personal satisfaction.

Aries (March 21 - April 20)

We have been flashing warning signs and sounding the trumpet for upcoming planetary changes for months now for all Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Since you Arians hate to have anyone tell you, "No," get used to that word. You Rams go where angels fear to tread-not anymore. You boys and girls will learn to say, "May I," "Thank you, ma'am," and "Please". The cosmos is no longer in your corner and you had better start living one day at a time-one minute at a time.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20)

For those of you who have been beaten and bruised by the know-it-alls of the Zodiac, the long and winding road being laid down by Capricorn and Virgo are going to swell your chest with pride that your time has finally come. As long as you get over your selfish and self-centered and materialistic ways-learn to 'receive to share'-this run of show is going to bless you Bulls like no other time in your life. Jump up and shout, 'It's gonna be a great day' for a long, long time.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

I just got this memo from the Stars and here is what it had to say about you Twins: 'Save, don't spend. Learn how to cook with the one(s) you love. Be prudent with your words and neither a borrower nor a lender be." Ain't the Oracles from Pluto and Jupiter and Saturn smarter than any town crier you ever heard? You will start the year off being ingenious as the dickens and watching your savings grow. Ain't it super being two of you?

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

If you're not suffering from myopia you'll be able to see clear across the Zodiac to realize that Capricorn means business about telling you to mind your own business and letting everyone make up their minds about what is right for them. In case you haven't gotten the message, the Goats are speaking from the authority of Pluto and Jupiter in Capricorn for a long, long time. Saturn will strengthen your resolve to change you and let others do the same. This is really good, solid and sound advice that will ripple through your celestial readings all year long.

Leo (July 22 - August 22)

You can stomp your feet and making sour puss faces all you want but 'the good times have done got up and went,' as the hillbilly is wont to say. Have yourself a merry little Christmas and spend to the wall, but you will soon get the message that what you wear and drive and live haven't got a thing to do with character or charity. Take a page from your next-door neighbor Virgo and go over your finances and save more than you spend. I don't know exactly when, but you will love the advice to freeze your open-to buy mania.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

You've been waiting for foreign aid for a few months and soon you will get it when Jupiter and Pluto take over Capricorn by storm. Known for your ability to perceive and make sound judgments (albeit a bit too picky, critical and analytical for my tastes), you  will feel like the Universe loves you when we all have to march to the beat of a tune you can hum by heart. Ease up on friends and enemies alike. We're learning, we're learning.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Prissy and practical, never alone for a moment (you hate your own company, I assume), you Scales of Justice are going to see le fin de siecle or at least the end of bling-weary opulence for a very long time. You might want to lay away your finest linens and store your Queen Anne chairs securing your best china-the party is over. January 1 will ring in an era of conservatism and frugality. Oh, you'll learn to live like the hoi polloi.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

Now you get to see if you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. This should not deter you magicians of the Zodiac. With Saturn sending you good vibes and having the good fortune of being compatible with Capricorn, Pluto and Jupiter will make you feel right at home as you spin your tales and work your way to the top of the heap. Make friends as you go; "down" always comes sooner than later. For now, enjoy the ride.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 20)

No one had more small craft warnings about losing your closest ally, Jupiter, as it slipped into Capricorn. Not all is lost because fertilizer always keeps the crops for a season or two without needing more. I suggest that you take all the lessons you learned in the last year and use the solid, slow, and deliberate game plan of your ruler's setting up housekeeping in Capricorn to build a firm foundation for the rest of your life. I've said it a million times-there ain't a better more durable sign than yours!

Give and Receive

Sometimes I am not as generous as I would like to be. The selfish voice tells me I need the money more than some charity. My other common utterance is I'm too busy to give of my time.  A few days ago I wrote a donation check to an organization, which I like and believe in.  Two days later I received a refund check from a utilities company-for nearly the exact same amount of my donation. I don't necessarily believe that the Universe rewards us for doing a good deed, but more than anything I do know that the check I got was confirmation that I need to give and keep on giving. For a number of years I have believed in the principle, "receive to share," but like everything else, I don't always do it. Do you need a nudge to be generous with those people and organizations that need your financial support, or your caring heart? Take a tip from me and do it anyway.  It feels fantastic!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
